Too Much of a Good Thing? Fact or Fiction?

Jul 11, 2025

We’re (or should I say Hudson) struggling in our home with learning the concept of "there is such a thing as too much of a good thing.”

Don’t get me wrong, there are never too many hugs, cuddles and conversations to be had. But there were way too many ice cream cones eaten on a Disney Cruise that made us miss a show, too much pineapple eaten that gave us sore bumps on our tongues, too much speed on our bike that result in wipeouts and too many times not putting our hands down in front of our face, resulting in several face injuries.

I don’t know if it’s a boy thing or what but even getting an undesired outcome is still not enough of a lesson to help "us" not remember to change our actions for next time.

And yet, how many of us as leaders try to “lead” each of our team members the same way, only to result in frustration when they don’t change their actions?

We get to find what motivates them. In order for us to lead others better, we must adapt to each person and find their loves to ignite their passion. What motivates them to do their job, well? What do they love doing each day at work? How can I best serve you as your leader? When we ask questions first, and adapt to fit their needs, the outcome is so much more positive. And you learn how to lead even better.

Sure enough, when I asked Hudson over 4th of July weekend, “How is your tummy going to feel after another soda, buddy?”, he replied with, “Oh, probably not good, Mommy. I’ll have water instead.”.

Will this happen every time? Absolutely not. But it was definitely a step in the right direction.

Your consistency in adapting to your team will pay off, too; I promise.
