Saying Yes (and No) This School Year - A Note from Denise
Aug 14, 2025As the new school year kicks into gear, I find myself thinking a lot about what I’m really wanting to say yes to, and what I’m letting go of. Not only as a working mom navigating all the familiar schedules, sports runs, and homework deadlines but as a person who wants to lead the kids to know they don’t have to fill their schedule too full.
I wanted to share my list with you, hoping it might inspire you as you juggle everything on your plate. As a reminder, this is what I WANT to do. It doesn’t mean it’s happening every day. Much like the viral Kodiak Protein Muffins I made this week. The kids did not like them. Looks like Jeremy and I are eating some protein muffins.
Here are 5 things I’m saying YES to this school year:
- Tightly scheduled mornings: I’m stacking tasks when my brain is sharpest so the rest of my day feels lighter.
- Midday silent car rides: 5-10 minutes of quiet- no radio, no calls- to clear my head before gymnastics, football drop-offs, and dinner duty.
- Intentional conversations: Whether at the dinner table, in the car between practices, or with friends at games, I’m choosing words and people that truly connect.
- Doing what fuels me: The work, relationships, and moments that bring me energy instead of draining it, and saying no to those that don’t.
- Being vulnerable: Letting others see that the “flow” in my life comes from planning, sacrifices, and heart. And honestly, sometimes there isn’t a flow at all, and that’s okay, too.
And here are 3 things I’m NOT saying yes to:
- Over-apologizing: I’m done apologizing for juggling a lot, trying to rest, setting boundaries, or being fully me.
- Performing for approval: I don’t have to earn my seat at the table. It’s already mine, and yours is next to me.
- Letting guilt lead: Instead, I’m trying to let grace, growth, and grounded-ness be my guides.
Here’s to handling all the new schedules, sports runs, and school projects, and still making space for what matters most.
Let’s do this,
Denise
